The European Parliament is preparing to consider a vote of no confidence.
The European Parliament is preparing to consider a vote of no confidence in European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
It is reported by Euractiv and Euronews.
The submission was initiated by far-right Romanian MP George Piperia. He heads the Alliance for the Unity of Romanians (AUR) party, part of the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) faction.
Last week, Piperia initiated a motion of no confidence with an initial 74 signatures. Several lawmakers subsequently withdrew their votes, but the far-right leader said the number of signatories had risen to 79, enough for the issue to be considered in parliament.
The reason was Romanian MEPs' outrage over von der Leyen's secret correspondence with Pfizer pharmaceutical company CEO Albert Burla during negotiations over the purchase of the COVID-19 vaccine.
In addition, the head of the European Commission has been accused of likely misuse of funds following the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the agency's alleged attempt to promote "green politics" by funding non-governmental organizations.
Transparent chances
President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola has informed the Conference of Presidents (the agenda-setting body) that the initiative meets all requirements under Rule 131 of the European Parliament's Rules of Procedure.
The initiative will be discussed on Monday, July 7, and voted on Thursday, July 10, during the plenary session in Strasbourg. This will happen on the condition that Metsola announces a final decision by the end of this week. At least 361 out of 720 votes are needed to approve a vote of no confidence.
At the same time, the likelihood of a no-confidence motion remains low.
"There will be a vote against this motion, I am sure of it, because the majority still supports von der Leyen. And even if there are many in that majority who are dissatisfied with her policies, at the moment they will not force her to resign," Piperia said.
The Romanian MP, however, hopes that the initiative could "open a Pandora's box," prompting further no-confidence motions in the coming months.
