NYP: Putin Is Going To Feel Real Pain

What Trump's new ultimatum means.

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a reduction in the previously announced 50-day deadline he gave Russia to reach a peace deal with Ukraine. The Kremlin now has only 10-12 days to stop the war - or it will face powerful economic sanctions.

According to the New York Post, the American leader gave Russian ruler Vladimir Putin "less time to kill." And it was the right decision.

"There's no reason to wait...I'm ready to impose 100 percent tariffs on countries that buy Russian goods," Trump told reporters on Monday, emphasizing that the Kremlin was showing no goodwill.

This abrupt decision was widely supported in expert and political circles in the United States. Observers believe that the initial deadline of September 2 only gave Putin more time to continue fighting.

"Putin's goal has never been peace, it is and always has been the total destruction of Ukraine," the US observers said in a publication.

Moscow's response to the previous ultimatum only confirmed the Kremlin's aggressive intentions. Hours after Trump voiced his demands, Russia launched strikes on civilian targets in Ukraine.

High-ranking Russian officials have called Trump's threats a "theatrical ultimatum," but experts believe that this time economic leverage could prove truly painful.

"The Kremlin should be worried. Russia's economy is a house on rickety stilts. Putin has invested at least 40 percent of the budget in the war, while citizens are barely surviving," the publication writes.

The possible reaction of Russia's largest trading partners, China and India, is also a cause for concern. The threat of secondary sanctions and 100% tariffs may prompt them to seek alternative markets.

The legislative initiative of Senator Lindsey Graham to impose a 500% tariff on importers of Russian oil also demonstrates support for the idea of putting pressure on Russia.

"Trump has no choice but to make the Russian dictator feel real pain. And now is exactly the time to do it," the conclusion emphasizes.
