Bloomberg: The US Has Begun A New Era Of Containment Of Russian Federation

Washington is returning nuclear weapons to Britain.

The United States has returned tactical nuclear weapons to British territory for the first time since 2008.

The move, according to experts, is an open signal to Russian dictator Vladimir Putin: Washington has no intention of weakening Europe's defenses. This is stated in the article Bloomberg.

On July 16, a US Air Force transport plane made a flight from the Kirtland base in New Mexico to the British airbase Lakenheath. The aircraft belongs to a specialized unit of the Prime Nuclear Airlift Force, which is responsible for transporting nuclear munitions.

It is interesting that the plane flew with a transponder on, that is, intentionally did not hide either the route or its destination. According to analyst William Alberke of Pacific Forum, such behavior is not accidental.

"This is a demonstrative move. The US is clearly showing Russia that it is not going to curtail its nuclear presence in Europe," the expert said.

It is most likely about the delivery of new B61-12 thermonuclear bombs. This weapon is already called the most accurate and versatile in the US arsenal. Its yield can be varied from 0.3 to 50 kilotons, and its guidance allows it to hit both military targets and large cities. These munitions are compatible with modern F-35A fighter jets, which are actively purchased by NATO countries.

"There are good reasons to believe that the US has indeed returned nuclear warheads to the UK," said the head of the nuclear weapons project at the Federation of American Scientists, Hans Christensen.

American and British authorities naturally do not disclose details regarding the deployment of nuclear weapons. However, Pentagon budget figures show that major upgrades to munitions storage facilities have been underway at Lakenheath for several years.

And last week, the British Defense Ministry confirmed that it is buying a dozen new F-35As specifically to participate in NATO's nuclear mission.

"This decision gives the Royal Air Force back the nuclear role it lost after the end of the Cold War," the ministry said in an official document.

U.S. President Donald Trump is also demonstrating his toughness on Russia. He agreed to transfer additional Patriot SAMs funded by European countries to Ukraine, and threatened Moscow with secondary sanctions if it does not agree to a ceasefire. The new ultimatum gives Moscow just 12 days to end the war.

According to Sidharth Kaushal of the RUSI think tank, the expansion of the U.S. nuclear presence in Europe increases NATO's maneuverability and constrains Russia's superiority in non-strategic nuclear forces.

"This is a critical element in adjusting the Alliance's nuclear policy. The return of nuclear warheads to Britain is a far from symbolic step," Alberke emphasized.

According to Christensen, the B61-12 bombs are already deployed at seven bases in six NATO countries today. However, even while outside the United States, such weapons can only be used after a direct order from the American president.
