Trump Claimed To Have Ended The Cambodia-Thailand War In 24 Hours
Donald Trump

The US president said he had prevented the deaths of "millions of people".

US President Donald Trump says he has prevented the deaths of "millions of people" in the armed standoff between Cambodia and Thailand, ending the conflict in 24 hours. The statement was made in Scotland, where the US leader arrived last weekend on a multi-day visit.

"This is peace. This would have been a very hard war ... It could have gone on for years. Millions of people could have died. We have ended the war - and we're very happy about that," Trump said. His speech was broadcast by Sky News.

The White House chief noted that if it were not for him, the world would now have five more major wars between countries - trading partners of the United States in addition to the conflict between Cambodia and Thailand.

"I said: "I will not make any trade agreements until you settle your differences," Trump explained how he forced the conflicting sides to negotiate.

The day before, Thailand and Cambodia agreed to a temporary ceasefire after talks held in Malaysia.

The ceasefire agreement is set to take effect from midnight July 29 local time (July 28 7:00 p.m. Minsk time). The militaries of the conflicting countries are then expected to hold an "informal meeting."
