There was nothing like this even in the Cold War era.
Russia is fighting a war without a single ally for the first time in its history, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Monday.
"Russia is fighting alone against the entire West. In World War I, in World War II, we had allies. Now we have no allies on the battlefield. Therefore, we must rely on ourselves. No weakness or slackness should be allowed," Lavrov said, speaking at the Territory of Sense forum, writes The Moscow Times.
Europe, which has historically served as Russia's main trading partner, has become "fierce," according to the minister, and the United States has lost "respect" for the Kremlin, which was not the case even during the Cold War era. "In the Cold War, the dialog was never interrupted between the USSR and the U.S., and what else seems very important to me to note today is that in the Cold War there was mutual respect. Now there is none," Lavrov said.
He added that Russia continues to insist on what it considers its "legitimate demands" for security. These include Ukraine's non-joining NATO, refusal to expand the alliance eastward, and recognition of "realities on the ground" - that is, the annexation of occupied Ukrainian territories.
