In The U.S., A Moose Has Been Blocking A Popular Tourist Route For Two Months

It remains a mystery why the moose won't leave.

A large male moose is permanently in the same spot in the vicinity of a popular hiking trail in the Adirondack Mountains in New York State, causing New York State wildlife officials to close the trail to hikers. This was reported on July 26 by AP.

The trail on Mount Goodman in the Horseshoe Lake Wild Forest has been temporarily closed since June 6 due to strange animal behavior. According to the Department of Environmental Conservation, the moose is constantly on or near the trail near the summit, sometimes sitting and sometimes feeding in a small area.

Department expert Dave Kramer said this is very unusual behavior. Usually this time of year, elk descend to lower elevations where they mostly feed on vegetation near water. Kramer estimates the moose is about 1.8 meters tall at the withers and weighs at least 408 kilograms. Judging by the span of its antlers, it is probably about four years old.

It remains a mystery why the moose won't leave. The department suspects an underlying illness affecting behavior. So far, the animal has shown no signs of aggression. However, the hiking trail remains closed, in part because of concerns that the large animal could pose a danger to humans if approached too closely.

The animal is being monitored with three surveillance cameras, and preserve staff regularly climb the mountain.
