Ukraine needs allies who are willing to understand the complexities of wartime.
For more than three years, Ukraine has been fighting for survival against Russian aggression. Victory depends not only on the courage of the army and the resilience of the Ukrainian people, but also on the strong support of allies and the unity of all Ukraine's supporters, writes the Atlantic Council (translated by Charter97.org).
International support for Ukraine remains fragile and vulnerable to political changes in partner countries. Public attacks on the Ukrainian government, especially from the diaspora or foreign allies, pose an additional threat, giving arguments to opponents of aid to Kyiv.
Criticism is important for democracy, but it must be constructive. Every ill-considered condemnation of Ukraine plays into the hands of those who want to cut off support, citing alleged "hopeless corruption" or "internal divisions" in the country.
The recent controversy over a law concerning the independence of anti-corruption bodies is a case in point. While concerns about government transparency are understandable, some allies have opted for caution and finding solutions rather than harsh criticism.
Many observers and members of the diaspora often succumb to emotion and loud headlines, ignoring context. However, Ukraine needs allies willing to understand the complexity of wartime and not withdraw support because of individual mistakes.
The real problem is insufficient international aid. To compensate for a possible decrease in U.S. support, European countries only need to allocate 0.21% of GDP. Estonia, Lithuania and Denmark are already exceeding this figure, while Germany, France and Italy are lagging behind.
