Karpowicz cited some strange numbers.
The head of the MART said that by regulating prices it was possible to keep inflation much lower compared to "pandemic years", when it "could reach 18-20%". Minister of Antimonopoly Regulation and Trade Arthur Karpovich told Respublika. However, the official seems to have confused something, because in the main pandemic years 2020-2021, the price growth was much lower.
The head of the MART said that now Belarus is experiencing moderate price growth.
- Especially compared to the pandemic years, when inflation could reach 18-20%.
The official did not specify which years he was referring to, noted "Mirror". The World Health Organization considers 2020 through May 2023 as the pandemic years. However, it is in 2020-2021 that the key economic impact of the pandemic is felt. In this case, the head of the IART, most likely, mixed up something, because then the inflation rate was 7.4% and 10% (Belstat then indicated it at 9.97%).
Reminder, in June this year, the figure was 7.3% per annum. That is almost the same as in 2020. And this is with large-scale price restraint.
Perhaps the head of the ministry responsible for prices was referring not to the whole year, but to June of the relevant year? But even in this case his words diverge from reality. In June 2020, annual inflation was 5.1%, and in June 2021 - 10%. This is also significantly less than Arthur Karpovich stated.
There is also a version that the official meant 2022. Then the year-end inflation was 12.8%. But in June of that year it really reached 17.6%. However, it should be noted that in that year, the Belarusian economy was greatly influenced not so much by the echo of the consequences of the pandemic, but by sanctions and Russia's military aggression in Ukraine.
