The MRC system was first deployed in the Philippines.

The US Army conducted the first launch of its new MRC missile system in the Western Pacific Ocean, hitting and sinking a sea target. This is according to Business Insider.

The Army said the 3rd Multidisciplinary Task Force successfully launched a Standard Missile-6 missile using the MRC Universal Launcher and sank an unidentified maritime target. The test took place earlier this month during a joint Talisman Sabre exercise in northern Australia.

The agency said it was the first launch of a ground-based MRC system west of the date change line dividing the Pacific Ocean.

"Deploying the MRC system and successfully executing a live fire against a maritime target is another significant step forward in developing our ability to deploy, integrate and operate advanced land-based maritime strike assets," said Col. Col. Wade Germann, commander of Multi-Mission Task Force 3.

It is noted that while this was the first MRC combat test in the region, the system has already been used there, notably during a joint exercise with the Philippines last year. The MRC is a valuable system for the military, filling a gap in both capability and range, providing a flexible way to launch both SM-6 and Tomahawk land-based strike missiles.

When the MRC system was first deployed in the Philippines, China was quick to express its displeasure. Last September, Lin Jian, China's military spokesman abroad, called the deployment "an attempt to turn back the wheel of history," adding that "it seriously jeopardizes the security of regional countries, provokes geopolitical confrontation and raises the heightened vigilance and concern of regional countries."

He earlier said Beijing "firmly opposes the strengthening of US forward basing near China's borders."

Last year, China also expressed its displeasure with the Philippines over the MRC system. Beijing said the Philippines, a key US ally, was serving American interests at the expense of its own. Manila has expressed interest in the MRC system's capabilities as a useful combat capability.

In response to a question about the latest news, the Chinese Embassy in the United States said the MRC system is "strategic and offensive":

"China strongly opposes the U.S. deployment of a ground-based medium-range missile system in the Asia-Pacific region, whatever it may be."

The MRC tests in Australia, the Army said, confirmed the forward-deployed system's long-range precision fire capability. They also provided valuable knowledge and experience for future land-based maritime strike capabilities. Mobile launchers capable of engaging targets both on land and at sea have tremendous potential in combat operations in the Pacific.
