Lithuania Says It Is Ready To Receive More US And NATO Troops

Vilnius has completed the necessary infrastructure modernization.

Lithuania is ready to receive additional US and NATO forces, the commander-in-chief of the country's armed forces, General Raimundas Vaikschnoras, has said. According to him, which was published on the country's army website, the necessary infrastructure modernization has been completed, which makes it possible to accommodate more allied troops.

"We have done all the necessary infrastructure modernization-now we can accommodate even more allied troops <...> As a host country, we are doing everything possible to make the allies feel ready here," the general said.

He noted that all branches of Lithuania's forces - land, air and sea - participate in NATO exercises and operations. In particular, the Navy is involved in the Baltic Sentry operation to protect critical maritime infrastructure.

The Lithuanian Defense Ministry, ahead of the Baltic defense ministers' visit to Washington, also recalled the importance of the U.S. contingent for the country.

"Lithuania attaches great importance to the presence of U.S. military forces in our country and the region as a cornerstone of security. We value not only their presence but also their active cooperation," said Defense Minister Dovile Šakalene.

According to the press release, the upcoming defense budget envisages an increase in military spending to 5.25 percent of GDP. Investments are also underway to develop combat capabilities and infrastructure.

Lithuania's defense procurement, the minister noted, is 20% related to contracts with U.S. companies. "This is more than just security, it is an expression of strategic partnership," Shakalene emphasized.
