Germany's Army Has Been Asked To Buy Spy Cockroaches

They can collect data on the battlefield in real time.

Biorobotics startup Swarm Biotactics has proposed to German authorities to reinforce the Bundeswehr with swarms of cyborg cockroaches equipped with special miniature backpacks and cameras to conduct real-time intelligence, surveillance and data collection on the battlefield. This was revealed to Reuters by the head of the Bundeswehr's (German Armed Forces) cyber innovation center, Sven Weitzenegger.

He explained that such insects will be controlled remotely by the military using "electrical stimuli." The purpose of these mini-animals would be to obtain intelligence information in a hostile environment, such as data on enemy positions. "Our biorobots, based on living insects, are equipped with neural stimulation systems, sensors and secure communication modules," clarified the startup's CEO Stephan Wilhelm. According to him, the military will be able to control each cockroach individually; the second option is to operate in autonomous mode, "whole swarms".

Swarm Biotactics was founded in 2024, with its headquarters in Kassel, Germany, and a subsidiary in San Francisco, US. The company described its activities as creating "a new category of robotics" - living intelligent systems designed to work in environments inaccessible to drones and ground robots. These are cluttered, hard-to-reach and high-risk areas, including military conflict zones.

"Our mission is to create a scalable, dual-purpose intelligence platform adaptable to any terrain, threat or task," Swarm Biotactics CTO and co-founder Moritz Strube stated.
