Separatists Off The Coast Of Somalia Seized A Dry Cargo Ship Carrying Weapons Sent By Turkey To The Country's Authorities

Details.

Authorities in the unrecognized autonomous region of Puntland, located in eastern Somalia, detained a Turkish cargo ship Sea World, which was heading to the port of Mogadishu. According to The Maritime Executive, the Comoros-flagged dry cargo ship was carrying a shipment of Turkish military equipment allegedly destined for a training center in Mogadishu that is overseen by Turkey.

The Puntland Maritime Police Force (PMPF) intercepted the vessel in the Gulf of Aden and searched it, capturing the military cargo on video. The footage released by Puntland authorities shows weapons marked with Turkish army markings, including armored personnel carriers, mine-protection vehicles and anti-aircraft guns.

Navigation tracking systems show the vessel was transiting from Dongguan, China. Sea World is currently docked at the port of Bossaso. Puntland authorities are conducting an investigation, the official reasons for the detention of the dry cargo ship have not yet been given.

The publication notes that the incident with the detention of the ship has increased tensions between the leadership of Puntland and the federal government of Somalia in Mogadishu. Last week, Puntland accused the central government of provoking armed clashes in the Sanag region, saying the federal government was sending clan militias into its territory. Last year, Puntland suspended recognition of Somalia's central authority amid disputes over constitutional reform.

Puntland declared autonomy in 1998 and was granted autonomous region status within a federal Somalia in 2004. Turkey remains a key ally of Somalia's central government, providing military aid, training and logistical support.
