Turkey has unveiled its first hypersonic missile Tayfun Block-4. The presentation took place at the IDEF 2025 international arms exhibition in Istanbul, Anadolu reported. It is a modification of the Tayfun ballistic missile created by state defense company Roketsan. The hypersonic novelty weighs more than 7 tons, is about 10 meters long and has a diameter of 938 mm. It is designed to destroy air defense systems, control points, military hangars and strategic facilities at a distance of up to 3,000 kilometers. The missile strikes targets with high accuracy: the maximum deflection is 5 meters and its speed exceeds 6000 km/h.
Besides Tayfun Block-4, the company presented several other developments. Among them are Akata submarine missile (a modification of the existing Atmaca, range 250 km), Gokbora air-to-air missile (range 180 km), Eren barrage munition (range over 100 km), 300 Er air-launched ballistic missile and Simsek-2 two-stage launch vehicle capable of launching satellites weighing up to 1500 kg into sun-synchronous orbits over 700 km high. In addition, on the margins of IDEF 2025, a preliminary agreement was signed with the UK on the sale of 40 Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets to Turkey. According to a statement from the republic's Defense Ministry, the two countries "share a mutual desire to conclude" the deal as soon as possible.
The agreement was reached after Germany's Federal Security Council approved Ankara's request for the delivery of the said aircraft, submitted back in March 2023. Berlin had previously blocked the sale due to tensions between Turkey and its neighbor Greece. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the British government and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis were informed of the change of position, a Bloomberg source said. He said Ankara assured that it would use the fighters only in solidarity with NATO, meaning not against another member of the alliance.
Eurofighter is a joint project between Britain's BAE Systems, France's Airbus and Italy's Leonardo. The aircraft will be built in the UK using parts sourced from Germany. In addition Turkey is seeking US approval to buy new F-16 and F-35 fighter jets.
