ISW Assessed The Kremlin's Statements After Trump's Threats

Russia wants to prolong the war.

Russian officials continue to publicly state that Russia is not interested in a short-term solution to end the war against Ukraine. They do not want to hear about agreements that do not involve agreeing to the Kremlin's demands.

Hence, they were in no way intimidated there by US President Donald Trump's verbal threats to impose 100 percent duties and secondary sanctions against Moscow if it does not conclude a peace agreement with Kiev within 50 days. This is reported by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

So, on July 20, Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov said allegedly Russia is ready to "quickly" start peace talks to end the war, but it must achieve its goals, which he said are "obvious" and "unchangeable."

Analysts noted that Kremlin officials have consistently said, they say, that any peace settlement must address the supposed "root causes" of the war, and have repeated the original goals of "denazification" and "demilitarization" of Ukraine.

These are all terms the Kremlin has used throughout the war, calling for regime change in Ukraine, its neutrality, changing NATO's open-door policy, and denying the country the ability to defend itself against future Russian aggression.

"Peskov's July 20 statements underscore the Kremlin's continued disinterest in good-faith negotiations with Ukraine and its desire to prolong the war sooner rather than later," ISW continues to assess.
