Azerbaijan was helped by Zelensky.
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has held a telephone conversation with Azerbaijani leader Ilham Aliyev. The Ukrainian head of state thanked Baku for supporting Ukraine's territorial integrity and expressed solidarity in the conflict that erupted between Azerbaijan and Russia after the murder of the Safarov brothers by Russian security forces, "Dialog.UA" writes.
The conversation can be considered a public black mark
Kremlin from Azerbaijan, which previously preferred to maintain a cautious distance. Now Baku is acting from a position of strength. For the Kremlin, this move is particularly painful because Zelensky is Putin's personal enemy, a man whom Russian propaganda has for years demonized as a symbol of Ukrainian resistance.
Aliyev's public rapprochement with Zelensky at the height of the conflict and Russia's international isolation becomes not just a diplomatic gesture, but an open challenge to Moscow and its claims to leadership in the region.
Moscow is losing control
At the same time, two high-ranking employees of the Russian propaganda resource Sputnik Azerbaijan were detained in Baku.
The detainees were executive director Igor Kartavykh and editor-in-chief Evgeny Belousov. According to Azerbaijani sources, both were actually agents of the Russian FSB and acted under the cover of the media.
The detentions came amid a major scandal: Russian security forces arrested more than 50 Azerbaijani citizens in Yekaterinburg, which provoked a harsh reaction from Baku and a series of harsh statements about the violation of Azerbaijani rights.
New reality in the South Caucasus
In the conversation, the presidents of Ukraine and Azerbaijan also discussed bilateral relations in the energy and humanitarian spheres and agreed to intensify the work of the intergovernmental commission on economic cooperation.
With this background, the first reports about Vladimir Zelensky's possible visit to Azerbaijan - an event that would be a symbolic blow to the Kremlin's prestige - appeared.
