Russia Jails 135 Dagestanis For 'Jewish Pogrom' At Makhachkala Airport

Deadlines have been announced.

A court has handed down sentences to 135 defendants in criminal cases related to the "Jewish pogrom" at Makhachkala airport in 2023. The participants of the riots received from 6.5 to 15 years in prison. This is reported by the Investigative Committee in its Telegram channel.

The convicts were charged with participation in mass riots (parts 1 and 2 of Article 212 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation), violation of transportation security (part 3 of Article 263.1), attempt on the life of a law enforcement officer (Art. 317), use of violence against a representative of the authorities (Part 1 of Art. 318), incitement of hatred or hostility (paragraph "c" of Part 2 of Art. 282) and other crimes.

The riots occurred on the night of October 29-30, 2023 after the arrival of a flight from Israel amid the escalation of the conflict in the Gaza Strip. The crowd began checking passengers' passports, looking for Israeli citizens, before blocking the international terminal building and running out onto the runway. According to the Interior Ministry, some 1,500 people took part in the incident. The damage to the airport exceeded 24 million rubles.

The investigation found that on October 29, Ilya Ponomarev, Abakar Abakarov and Israil Akhmednabiyev posted publications in Telegram aimed at inciting hatred against Israeli citizens and encouraging them to participate in riots near Uytash airport. The Investigative Committee notes that the participants in the pogrom put up armed resistance to law enforcers, resulting in at least 23 injuries. In total, according to the agency, 142 people are involved in the crimes.
