Police lost three officers.
In Los Angeles, there was a powerful explosion at the training center of the Sheriff's Department, killing at least three people. Among the versions of the tragedy is considered an incident during the transportation of explosives.
According to Reuters.
The tragic incident occurred on Friday, July 18, at the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department training center located at Biscayloose Academy in the east of the city.
There shortly before 7:30 a.m. local time (2:30 p.m. GMT), a powerful explosion killed at least three people.
According to aerial video captured by ABC 7, the blast was powerful enough to damage nearby sheriff's vehicles, blowing out the windows of at least one SUV.
U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi confirmed the death toll and said authorities were still actively investigating the circumstances of the tragedy. She announced this on social network X (formerly Twitter):
"I just spoke with @USAttyEssayli (federal prosecutor Bill Esseily) about the apparently horrific incident that killed at least three people at a law enforcement training center in Los Angeles," Bondi wrote.
The incident has caused widespread outrage among U.S. law enforcement officials and has become the subject of a federal investigation.
Agents from the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) were called to the scene. Their presence indicates a probable violation of federal gun and explosives laws.
Some US media outlets, citing unnamed law enforcement sources, reported that the explosion occurred while the explosives were being transported by a bomb squad that was working at the training facility.
The center where the tragedy occurred serves as a specialized training facility and headquarters for the county sheriff's department's bomb squad. The facility is now cordoned off and access is restricted.
Authorities have not commented on whether there is a theory of terrorist attack or criminal negligence, but Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said the situation is extremely serious and all details will be released after the first phase of the investigation is complete.
"We lost three of our people. This is a terrible day for the entire law enforcement community in the county," said Robert Luna.
The bodies of the victims have not yet been officially identified, forensic tests are pending. Names will be announced after relatives are notified.
