Restrictive measures were introduced back in 2004.

U.S. President Donald Trump has lifted sanctions imposed against Syria back in 2004.

This is according to a press release posted on the White House website.

On Monday, June 30, Trump signed an executive order that lifted U.S. sanctions imposed against Syria back in 2004.

The restrictions will end as early as Tuesday, July 1, in order to maintain the country's path to "stability and peace."

The executive order states that Trump is lifting sanctions against Syria while maintaining restrictions against the country's deposed former dictator Bashar al-Assad and his associates.

The restrictions would also apply to "human rights violators, drug traffickers and those linked to chemical weapons, ISIS or its affiliates, and their Iranian proxies."

The document also allows for the relaxation of export controls on certain goods and lifts restrictions on foreign aid to Syria, as well as a review of the status of the country's interim head of state, Ahmed al-Sharaa, as a "terrorist."

Then Trump directed Secretary of State Marco Rubio to reconsider recognizing Syria as a state sponsor of terrorism, as well as: exploring sanctions relief at the UN to support stability in Syria.
