Not provoking Trump.
NATO officials organizing the alliance's summit in The Hague will try to arrange the meeting so that Vladimir Zelensky can attend without provoking Donald Trump.
This is according to Reuters.
"Diplomats say he may attend the dinner before the summit, but he will not be allowed into the main summit session. That said, it is still unclear whether the summit's short statement will define Russia as a threat or express support for Ukraine," the piece said.
All these cautious steps, journalists note, are being taken to avoid the wrath of Washington and also to avoid triggering a repeat of the February White House scandal between Trump and Zelensky that nearly destroyed the international coalition supporting Kiev.
"European NATO members, who see Russia as an existential threat and NATO as the primary means of countering it, want to demonstrate their continued strong support for Ukraine. But they are also desperate not to anger an unstable Trump," the media outlet noted.
One NATO official said that if Zelensky did not attend the summit in any form, it would be "at the very least a PR disaster."
According to the outlet, the summit and accompanying written statement are likely to be unusually short to minimize the likelihood of outbursts or controversy.
In the meantime, Zelensky will probably have to settle for an invitation to a pre-summit dinner hosted by King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands.
In contrast to the previous two annual NATO summits, the leaders do not plan to hold a formal meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Council.
"Many allies want Zelensky to be at the summit, but there is flexibility on the exact format that would allow his presence," a senior NATO diplomat added.
