Details Of Shoigu's Meeting With Kim Jong-un Have Become Known

The visit came at a time when a new president was sworn in in South Korea.

North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un has reiterated his pledge to "unconditionally support" his counterpart Vladimir Putin.

This was reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

In a meeting with Putin's top security aide Sergei Shoigu in Pyongyang, Kim said North Korea would "unconditionally support" Russia and "its foreign policy on all major international political issues."

As Bloomberg notes, Shoigu's visit came as South Korea swore in new President Lee Jae-men, a Democratic Party liberal, after months of political instability. Lee, who has campaigned for renewed dialogue with Pyongyang, pledged in his speech to "stabilize the situation on the Korean Peninsula as soon as possible" to reduce geopolitical risk.

It remains unclear whether Kim will respond to Lee's initiative. The North Korean dictator is growing closer to Moscow, sending troops to assist Russia in its war against Ukraine. His troops are gaining military experience in modern theaters of war.

Kim has increasingly cut ties with South Korea, abandoning the idea of peaceful reunification. Last year, North Korea destroyed parts of its own infrastructure once used to connect the peninsula's north and south, underscoring the deepening rift.
