Mongolia's Parliament Resigns Prime Minister

For weeks, there have been anti-corruption protests in Ulaanbaatar.

Mongolia's Prime Minister Luvsannamsrain Oyuun-Erdene announced on Tuesday, June 3, amid weeks-long anti-corruption protests in the capital Ulaanbaatar that he was resigning.

The day before, the resolution on the resignation of the head of the government after a secret ballot was adopted by the Great State Khural (parliament) of Mongolia.

Information agencies specify that Luvsannamsrayn Oyuun-Erdene will continue to fulfill his duties until a new prime minister is appointed. By law, a new head of the Mongolian government must be appointed within 30 days.

World agencies say protesters in Ulaanbaatar are demanding that Oyuun-Erdene reveal the source of income of his 22-year-old son, whose fiancée has posted pictures on social media of expensive gifts from him, including a diamond ring, a car and a branded handbag. A common slogan at the current protests, which were supported by many young people, according to the AFP news agency, was the phrase: "Resignation is easy".

Luvsannamsrain Oyuun-Erdene has served as Mongolia's prime minister since 2021. He denies all corruption charges against him.
