The U.S. Has Been Working On The Operation To Destroy Iran's Fordow For About 15 Years

The Pentagon revealed the details.

The US has been working on the operation to destroy the Iranian nuclear facility at Fordow for about 15 years. This was reported by the Pentagon on June 26.

The U.S. attack on the nuclear infrastructure took place on June 22. To defeat Fordow, located deep in the mountains, for the first time in history in real combat conditions used powerful non-nuclear 13-ton US GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP) aircraft bombs, the design of which was developed specifically for this operation.

According to the head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, U.S. Air Force General Dan Kane, two Defense Threat Reduction Agency officers were studying a facility in Iran built to enrich uranium for use in nuclear weapons. That agency, Kane emphasized, is the world's leading expert on underground targets such as Fordow.

Kane said that in 2009, the officer was told that "something was going on in Iran." He was shown "some photos and some highly classified intelligence" about "what looked like a large construction project in the mountains of Iran." The military officer was then tasked with investigating the site. He was then joined by his comrade.

According to Cain, they worked for 15 years to get a general idea of the site. However, after studying Fordow, they realized that the U.S. did not have weapons capable of penetrating it and destroying what was inside. The officers then began working with industry and other tacticians to develop the GBU-57. The general noted that the bombs were preceded by various modifications, hundreds of test firings and many launches of "full-scale weapons against extremely realistic targets with the sole purpose of destroying that target at a time and place of our nation's choosing."

"As part of Operation Midnight Hammer, which was led by President [U.S. President Donald Trump], on June 21 at 18.45, which is Sunday, June 22, at 2:15 a.m. in Iran, U.S. B-2 Spirit bombers from Wightman Air Force Base, Missouri, dropped 14 GBU-57 bombs on Fordow and a second nuclear facility, destroying those facilities and setting Iranian nuclear efforts back years," the release said.

Kane noted the tremendous role of the crews, "who flew non-stop for 36 hours and traveled more than 13,000 miles (an estimated 21,000 kilometers) round trip." He emphasized that the pilots did not know "when they would return home or if they would return at all." Overall, Midnight Hammer was a success because of the collaborative efforts of "bomber crews, DTRA experts, and thousands of scientists, pilots, and maintenance specialists."

"[This is]...what America's Joint Force does. We think, we design, we train, we rehearse, we test, we evaluate - every day. And when the call comes to accomplish a task, we do it," the general said.

"President Donald Trump led the most complex and secret military operation in history, and it was a stunning success that led to a cease-fire agreement and the end of the 12-day war [between Iran and Israel]. Through decisive military action, President Trump created the conditions to end the war [while] destroying - pick your word - Iran's nuclear capabilities," stressed US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. He added that it was a "historic attack" that he believes Americans should celebrate.
