The Alliance's secretary general revealed the details.

NATO leaders at a summit today will decide to increase defense spending to 5% of GDP.

Alliance Secretary General Mark Rutte said this during a meeting with US leader Donald Trump, Ukrainform reports.

"Now comes the big breakthrough. Today we will decide to go to 5%. We have to protect ourselves from our adversaries, but also because it is fair to equalize spending with the United States. With this 5%, the Europeans and Canadians will equalize their defense spending with the United States," he stressed.

Rutte said that without Trump, the increase in this defense spending by NATO allies would not have happened.

Gensec noted that only 7 NATO member states have now fallen short of the 2% defense spending goal, but they have pledged to do so this year.
