Northern And Central Europe In Favor Of Ukraine's NATO Membership

A memorandum was signed at the summit of the leaders of the Bucharest Nine and Northern European countries.

NATO member states of Northern and Central Europe and the Baltic States have supported Ukraine's accession to the alliance. This is stated in a joint statement by Poland, Romania and Lithuania, published on Monday, June 2, following the summit of the Bucharest Nine and Nordic countries in Vilnius, DW writes.

The summit countries strongly support Ukraine's future membership in the North Atlantic Alliance, they said.

Further pressure on Russia

According to the document, Russia has not shown a genuine interest in peace in Ukraine. Therefore, the countries participating in the summit said they intend to further strengthen efforts to contain Russia, in particular to support new EU sanctions.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, who participated in the meeting, thanked partners for their help and called for further assistance to his country, now in its fourth year of defense against a Russian invasion. "Arms production is crucial. Ukraine can already cover up to 40 percent of its arms needs, but a stable flow of funding is needed," he said. Zelensky emphasized that the Ukrainian army's actions on the frontline demonstrate the effectiveness of investments, especially in drone technology.

Zelensky doubted the success of the Istanbul talks

At the same time, Zelensky expressed doubts about the effectiveness of the second round of talks with the Russian delegation in Istanbul, taking place on the same day. "I am not sure that the Russians will be ready for some productive meetings, but we should always count on some solutions," he pointed out. According to the Ukrainian president, an unconditional ceasefire and the resolution of humanitarian issues, including the return of children abducted by Russia, are very important for his country.

The purpose of the Vilnius meeting was, among other things, to agree on positions ahead of the June NATO summit in The Hague.
