This contributed to the US President's early departure from the summit.
French President Emmanuel Macron's decision to make a "symbolic stop" in Greenland on his way to the G7 summit in Canada irritated U.S. leader Donald Trump and contributed to his decision to leave Canada early, the Financial Times writes, citing three officials who attended the summit.
Trump left the G7 summit a day early. Responding to Macron's suggestion that his departure was related to work on a truce between Israel and Iran, the US president said, "Wrong! He has no idea why I'm heading to Washington right now, but it certainly has nothing to do with the truce. Much more important! Intentionally or not, Emmanuel always confuses things."
On board Air Force One, the White House chief said he expects "total surrender" from Iran and warned Tehran against attacking US troops and facilities in the region, the FT writes.
The French leader flew to Greenland for the first time on June 15. Trump has repeatedly stated his intention to annex the island to the US. During the visit, Macron said, among other things, that he did not see Russia, which "today is involved in a high-intensity conflict and has been deliberately disregarding the UN Charter for several years," in the role of mediator in the conflict between Israel and Iran.
On the American president's desire to bring Greenland under US control, he said: "I don't think allies do that."
At the same time, a British official told the newspaper that Trump was "just tired of the G7" and "wanted to do something productive."
The U.S. leader's early departure from the G7 summit has raised fears that he may do the same at the NATO summit in The Hague, which runs from June 24 to 26. "Just imagine the effect it will have on Moscow if Trump leaves the NATO summit," said former Italian ambassador to NATO Stefano Stefanini.
