The Ayatollah issued threats against Washington.
Following US President Donald Trump's call for Iran's "unconditional surrender," the Islamic Republic's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has issued threats against Washington. "Any military intervention against Iran will undoubtedly cause them irreparable damage," he said in an address read out in a televised address on Wednesday, June 18.
Khamenei rejected Trump's demand and stressed that the people of Iran "cannot be spoken to in the language of threats," with Iranians "determined and will resist an imposed war just as much as an imposed peace." Iranian state TV channels that broadcast Khamenei's address did not show it, nor was his voice heard.
Iran's Foreign Ministry also warned foreign countries against intervening in the military conflict with Israel. Direct military intervention by a third country could lead to "a large-scale war that would cover the entire region and even go beyond its borders," Iranian spokesman Ismail Baghaei told Al Jazeera television. He allowed the possibility of negotiations with the US, while stating a complete loss of confidence in the US administration.
The day before, Trump wrote on the social network Truth Social that he expects Tehran to "unconditionally surrender." He also said the US has full control of Iran's airspace and addressed an open threat to Khamenei. "We know exactly where the so-called 'supreme leader' is hiding," Trump wrote and called the Ayatollah an "easy target." At the same time, he promised that the Iranian leader would not be assassinated - "at least for now."
