US Puts Troops In The Middle East On High Alert After Trump's Emergency Meeting With Generals

Tehran has begun to take retaliatory steps.

US troops stationed at bases across the Middle East were put on high alert shortly after US President Donald Trump held an emergency meeting at the White House with top military commanders and national security advisers.

As The New York Times reported, citing knowledgeable sources, the discussion centered on possible US involvement in strikes on Iranian nuclear sites, including the Fordow facility, amid an escalating conflict between Israel and Iran. The heightened security measures affected bases in the United Arab Emirates, Jordan and Saudi Arabia, among others. In total, there are more than 40,000 American troops in the Middle East.

The publication emphasizes that there is no consensus among the president's closest advisers on the need for strikes on Iran. At the same time, according to statements by U.S. officials familiar with the intelligence, Tehran has put missiles and other military equipment on standby, capable of attacking U.S. bases in the region. These measures are seen by the Iranian side as a retaliatory move to possible US intervention in the conflict on Israel's side.

In the meantime, following the Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, Tel Aviv expects the US-backed operation to continue. According to CNN, senior Israeli government officials are counting on Donald Trump to support their efforts and help complete what they have started. An Israeli official told the channel, "The whole operation is based on the fact that at some point the US will join in."

Israeli military sources emphasize that the country has alternative scenarios to destroy or temporarily disable the Fordow nuclear facility, which is located underground and is one of Iran's most secure nuclear infrastructure sites. However, as CNN points out, none of these scenarios can match the effectiveness of a strike by U.S. strategic bombers equipped with 30,000-pound bunker buster bombs capable of hitting facilities deep underground.
