The Scale Of The Problem That Made Lukashenko Panic Has Become Known

Agriculture has sharply "sagged" in Belarus.

Agriculture is "sagging" in Belarus. This industry has shown a decline in the first five months of this year - minus 1% compared to the same period of 2024, reports the National Statistics Committee. Judging by this data, the country has problems with the number of pigs, as well as with chicken production, writes "Zerkalo".

Reminder, June 15, during his working trip to Volkovysk, Alexander Lukashenko threatened officials to "take their heads off" because of the decline in beef and pork production.

So, in January - May, farms of all categories produced livestock and poultry (live weight) 751.1 thousand tons (a year earlier - 770.7 thousand tons). At the same time, milk and eggs for five months of this year were produced more than in the same period last year.

Belstat reports that on June 1 this year, agricultural organizations had 4 million heads of cattle, including cows - 1.4 million heads. A year earlier - 4.1 million and 1.4 million, respectively. At the same time, the number of pigs at the beginning of this month amounted to 1.9 million heads, a year earlier - 2.3 million.

What (not) the authorities say about the problems

The difficulties in pig breeding were discussed by officials at a meeting with Alexander Lukashenko back in September 2023. There are also problems with cattle in Belarus. Recall, May 29, Alexander Lukashenko and the leadership of the Council of Ministers discussed the "historical maximum" of cattle deaths. He scolded the officials and demanded from the chairman of the State Control Committee and the Prosecutor General to report on how many guilty people had been "jailed for this."

After the meeting with Lukashenko on May 29, Minister of Agriculture and Food Yuri Gorlov informed the journalists of state media about the statistics of cattle mortality. According to the official, in 2024, the death rate amounted to 147.9 thousand heads, while in four months of 2025 - 52 thousand.

In a document from the SCC, which was obtained by "Zerkalo", the department provides the same figures, but in more detail. The inspectors noted that in 2024 the number of fallen cows, bulls and calves increased by 19% in the country as a whole. The worst situation was in Mahiliou voblast (35% increase), Minsk voblast (23%) and Homel voblast (22%). In the first four months of this year, the situation worsened in Vitebsk region (plus 35% compared to the same period of 2024), as well as in Grodno and Gomel regions (10% each).
