Will The U.S. Go To War Against Iran?

Trump held a meeting at the White House.

U.S. President Donald Trump held a meeting at the White House on June 17 to discuss whether the United States should join Israeli airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, including one of the most guarded, the Fordow facility. Before that, he left the G7 summit in Canada early. Sources say there is no unanimity on the issue among his team, with some of the politician's advisers supporting the idea and others considering it too risky, writes CBS News.

The meeting lasted more than an hour. Republican senators generally support Trump's actions in the conflict between Israel and Iran, but are divided on the way forward. Senate Majority Leader John Thune said that the president is acting within his authority so far and it is too early to say whether a congressional vote is necessary, CNN reported.

Senator Lindsey Graham, on the other hand, urged Trump to act decisively and "go all-in" to stop Iran's nuclear program, even if it requires joint strikes with Israel.

The head of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Jim Risch, praised Trump for "masterful maneuvering" and noted that the president is constantly consulting with Congress. Meanwhile, Senator Tommy Tuberville said Congress should be involved in the discussion, especially if the situation threatens to escalate into a full-scale war.

Donald Trump previously made a high-profile statement on social media, writing that "the U.S. now has complete and total control of Iran's skies." This caused confusion because US officials had previously claimed that Israel was acting on its own, without the involvement of the US military in its operation against Iran.

"We now have complete and total control of Iran's skies. Iran had good trackers and other defense equipment, and lots of it, but it doesn't compare to American designed, invented and manufactured 'stuff.' Nobody does it better than the good old USA!" - Trump said.

CNN recalls that Israel has been actively using American aircraft and weapons purchased from the US, including F-35 fighter jets.

Although the US officially says it is not involved in Israeli strikes on Iranian targets, it is helping Israel repel Iranian retaliatory strikes that began after the first wave of Israeli attacks last week.

Trump also demanded Iran's complete surrender in the conflict with Israel and issued a threat against the country's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. According to Axios, the politician is seriously considering U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.

Additional comments were made by U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance. He wrote in X that Trump may decide to strike Iranian nuclear facilities to stop Tehran's uranium enrichment program. That decision, he emphasized, is entirely up to the president.

Vance also noted that many Americans fear a new military conflict after two decades of failed U.S. foreign policy. He expressed doubt that Iran needed to enrich uranium above civilian levels (i.e., above 3-5%) at all. According to the IAEA, Iran enriches uranium up to 60%, making it the only non-nuclear state in the world to take such a step.

Vance concluded that Trump is enlisting the US military only in the interests of Americans and that his actions are not about foreign policy adventures, but US security.

According to The New York Times, Washington has deployed dozens of refueling tankers to Europe that could be used in an operation against Iranian nuclear facilities such as Fordow. The possibility of a strike using US B-2 bombers and heavy-duty penetrating bombs is being discussed.

According to US intelligence officials, if the US attacks Fordow, Iran's response will be harsh: attacks by the Houthis in the Red Sea will resume, and pro-Iranian militants in Syria and Iraq will launch attacks on US bases. Even blocking the Strait of Hormuz, important for world oil, is possible.

In the meantime, Iran has already prepared missiles and weapons to attack U.S. bases in the region, including in Iraq, Qatar, Bahrain and the UAE.
