Canada Has Hit Putin's Inner Circle Hard With Sanctions

Canada Has Hit Putin's Inner Circle Hard With Sanctions

It became known who made the list.

Canada has adopted a new package of sanctions against Russian citizens, companies and vessels that help the Kremlin circumvent oil restrictions.

The Canadian government's website reported.

On June 17, the Canadian government stepped up its pressure on Russia.

The country's restrictions will primarily affect people in Russian President Vladimir Putin's entourage.

"Today Canada is announcing several measures, first of all - sanctions against a certain number of individuals in Russia, against more than 40 organizations in Russia and beyond," Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said during talks with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky at the G7 summit.

The new restrictions from Canada affected a number of individuals and legal entities, as well as vessels of the so-called "shadow fleet" transporting oil at inflated prices.

Who was hit by the sanctions

The new sanctions list includes 44 people, including:

Ludmila Ocheretnaya is Vladimir Putin's ex-wife;

Arthur Ocheretnaya is Lyudmila's current husband;
Mikhail Shelomov is Putin's nephew;
Valery Gergiev - a well-known Russian conductor, an active supporter of the regime;
Tatiana Yumasheva - daughter of the first president of the Russian Federation Boris Yeltsin;
Valentin Yumashev - her husband;
Anatoly Chubais - former head of Rusnano, one of the ideologists of reforms of the 1990s;
Natalya Kasperskaya - head of InfoWatch;
Irina Viner - former head coach of the Russian national rhythmic gymnastics team;
Karin Kneissl - former Austrian Foreign Minister known for her pro-Russian views.

Why it matters

This is the first time Putin's ex-wife has been officially placed under international sanctions. The new package is aimed at pressuring not only Russia's military and political leadership, but also the circle of people close to the dictator, including family members and loyal foreigners.

Restrictions against the "shadow fleet"

Canada has also imposed restrictions against ships that help Russia circumvent the oil embargo - the so-called "shadow fleet" that transports energy at artificially inflated prices.

The new sanctions package is meant to strengthen Russia's financial isolation and make it harder to finance the war against Ukraine.
