NATO To Stop Revealing Details Of Military Aid To Ukraine

To make it harder to plan Russia's military operations.

NATO will stop disclosing details of arms deliveries to Ukraine to make it more difficult for Russia to plan military operations. Representatives of three NATO countries told The Moscow Times on condition of anonymity ahead of the military alliance's June 24-26 summit in The Hague.

Germany took a similar step earlier after electing Friedrich Merz as its new chancellor. The German government decided not to disclose information about the supply of long-range Taurus missiles to Ukraine, and subsequently classified all information related to military support.

"At first we published everything. Then we wondered why. We even specified the number of missiles and ammunition. In the end we realized that this helps Putin, not German society," said a German diplomat.

NATO is growing concerned that Russia is taking advantage of the alliance's information openness, sources told The Moscow Times.

"Everything that is discussed or said at press conferences appears almost in real time in Telegram news feeds. The impression is that they follow it even more closely than our own media," said a spokesman for one of the alliance's leading countries.

The lengthy talks between the defense and foreign ministers were of great interest to Russian state media, he said. The meeting with Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, after which NATO's decision to allocate 20 billion euros in military aid to Ukraine for 2025 became known, was followed especially closely.

"The TASS and RIA Novosti feeds were overflowing with details of the discussions," the source said.

Another interlocutor said that Russian TV channels were actively analyzing statements by NATO ministers in their flagship programs, interpreting them in a way favorable to Moscow.

The Kremlin relies on turning even the most insignificant episodes into occasions for scandals and conflicts. Such a strategy is vividly evident in recent disinformation campaigns against Moscow's opponents.

French President Emmanuel Macron has found himself at the center of such efforts, first through rumors concerning his wife and then in an episode involving a slap in the face before leaving the plane on the ramp.

Analogous tactics have been used against other European leaders who support Ukraine, including Macron again, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Pro-Kremlin TV channels, online media and popular Telegram feeds tried to pass off a napkin lying in front of politicians as a bag of cocaine - with the aim of discrediting Kiev's Western allies.
