Israel Completely Destroyed Centrifuges At Iran's Main Nuclear Plant

Details have also emerged about the destruction at the Isfahan nuclear facility.

Centrifuges for uranium enrichment at Iran's underground Natanz plant may have been completely destroyed by Israeli strikes on June 13, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Raphael Grossi, said. He said this was due to a power outage and the destruction of the above-ground part of the plant. "Our assessment is that with this sudden loss of external power, in all likelihood the centrifuges have been severely damaged, if not completely destroyed," Grossi told the BBC.

He also added that radioactive and chemical contamination has occurred at the site, but radiation levels outside remain within normal limits for now. No inspections are being carried out at the site at the moment for safety reasons. "I could never expose my inspectors to such a danger, so of course the facilities are closed, they are inaccessible for any normal activities," the IAEA chief said. He said the main problem inside the plant remains the chemical toxicity of uranium hexafluoride and fluoride compounds formed by contact with water.

Also damage from the Israeli attack was recorded at a nuclear facility in Iran's Isfahan. Four buildings were destroyed there, Grossi noted: a central chemical laboratory, a uranium conversion plant, a reactor fuel fabrication plant and a uranium tetrafluoride processing facility. As at Natanz, off-site radiation levels remain unchanged. At the same time, no damage has been reported at the Fordow Fuel Enrichment Plant site and the Khondab heavy water reactor, which is under construction. The Bushehr nuclear power plant has not been the target of recent attacks and has not been damaged, nor has the Tehran research reactor.
