Iran has been called "a major source of regional instability."
US President Donald Trump and other leaders of the Group of Seven (G7, G7) countries have unexpectedly agreed on a joint statement on the current situation in the Middle East. The text of the document, released late Monday night, June 16, by summit organizer Canada, called Iran "the main source of regional instability and terror" and stressed Israel's right to self-defense. The G7 heads of state and government also reiterated their long-held position that Iran should never be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons, German Wave reported.
The joint communique was agreed hours after the White House announced that Trump would return to Washington early because of the crisis in the Middle East and cancel the second day of the summit.
In the meantime, Donald Trump himself wrote on his Truth Social platform that he did not return to Washington at all because of the "truce between Israel and Iran," as French President Emmanuel Macron claimed, and accused the latter of spreading false information. "Not true! He has no idea why I'm heading to Washington right now, but it certainly has nothing to do with the truce," Trump assured. According to him, there is something "much more important" going on. "On purpose or not, Emmanuel always gets it wrong," the American president added.
No direct criticism of Israel
The statement from the leading democratic economic powers did not directly criticize Israel's actions against Iran, noting only the importance of protecting civilians during the conflict and stating that a solution to the Iranian crisis should contribute to a broader de-escalation of tensions in the Middle East, including a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
The document states that the G7 will continue to closely monitor the impact of the current conflict on international energy markets and, if necessary, will take coordinated action with like-minded countries to ensure market stability.
