Warehouses Emptied: When Will The Russian Federation Exhaust Its Tank Stockpile?

ISW analysts have uncovered some interesting data.

The aggressor country Russia is increasingly using fast motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles on the battlefield in Ukraine. The occupants' stockpiles of tanks and armored vehicles may be sufficient until the end of this year at the most. This is according to a report by the US-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

The analysts cited a social media source who monitors equipment at Russian military depots using satellite images. On June 15, he shared an updated estimate of several warehouses with tanks and armored vehicles.

The source estimated, among other things, that Russia's warehouses hold 46 percent of its pre-war tank stockpile, as well as 42 percent of its BMP stockpile and 48 percent of its APC stockpile.

"Images of eight Russian military warehouses seem to indicate that Russia has emptied most of the warehouses where equipment stockpiles were stored. It is estimated that Russia is likely to exhaust its stockpiles of tanks and armored vehicles remaining by the end of 2025," the report said.

The source also added that at the end of December 2024, Russia had 47 percent of its pre-war stockpiles of tanks, 52 percent of BMPs and 45 percent of APCs.

At the same time, analysts noted that Russian troops are increasingly using motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) instead of armored vehicles on the front line.

"Russia's increased use of motorcycles is an adaptation in response to widespread Ukrainian drone strikes against Russian armored vehicles and the unsustainable armored vehicle losses that Russian forces suffered in late 2023 and 2024. Ukrainian drone operations have greatly complicated the tactical use of tanks, as large and slow armored vehicles and tanks are vulnerable to drones," ISW stressed.
