Washington will have more options in the region for different scenarios.
In response to the threat of escalating conflict between Israel and Iran, the United States is concentrating its most powerful military forces in the Central Command (CENTCOM) area of responsibility. Two US aircraft carriers, the Carl Vinson and the Nimitz, are heading to the Middle East at once, writes former Royal Navy officer Tom Sharp for The Telegraph.
Each carrier strike group (CSG) is a complex combat structure built around a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier carrying 65-70 combat aircraft, including F/A-18 Hornet fighters and the latest F-35Cs. They are escorted by Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, Ticonderoga-class cruisers or additional destroyers, and attack submarines carrying Tomahawk missiles.
"These ships form a defensive 'bubble' resistant even to hypersonic weapons, and are capable of launching pinpoint strikes against coastal targets thousands of kilometers away," Sharpe writes.
The aircraft carrier Carl Vinson is already present in the region, conducting air operations against the Houthis. Meanwhile, the Nimitz is heading from the Philippines through the Strait of Malacca, probably toward the Strait of Hormuz, a critical point for world energy flows.
American analysts do not rule out that Iran could try to challenge control of the Strait of Hormuz through limited military action: landings, hijacking ships or missile attacks. However, a complete closure of the strait is considered unlikely because of the dependence on it of countries such as China, India and Iran itself.
To deter the potential threat, the US has also deployed B-2 strategic stealth bombers armed with deep-penetrating munitions, the world's only weapon capable of destroying deep Iranian nuclear facilities, to the island of Diego Garcia.
