London is in talks to buy the F-35A.
Britain has begun talks with the United States to buy F-35A fighter jets capable of carrying B61-12 thermonuclear bombs, The Times reported, citing senior officials. They said the decision was made because of the growing threat from Russia. The initiative was approved by Prime Minister Kir Starmer. The purchase of the fighter jets will be the most significant change to Britain's nuclear deterrent since the Cold War
London had earlier ordered 48 F-35B fighter jets from the US for the Royal Navy's two aircraft carriers. 47 of them have already been received. F-35A Lightning stealth fighters have a longer range of 1,400 kilometers. They will be the second component of the nuclear deterrent. They can be used in situations that do not envisage a full-scale war, as well as deployed directly to the battlefield, a capability that Britain does not currently have. The F-35A will partially replace inferior European Eurofighter Typhoon fighters. The Royal Air Force plans to scrap 49 of those aircraft.
Defense Minister John Healey declined to comment on talks to buy the F-35A, but acknowledged that Britain must adapt to a "new era of threats." "The world is definitely becoming more dangerous. Nuclear risks are rising. And we are facing real threats of interstate conflict for the first time since the end of the Cold War," he said.
British nuclear weapons are housed on four Vanguard-type nuclear submarines. It was also reported in December that the US plans to deploy tactical nuclear weapons at the Lakenheath military base in Suffolk County in the next few years.
Besides expanding its nuclear arsenal, the British government is investing 6 billion pounds ($8.1 billion) in the creation and procurement of munitions. 1.5 billion of that amount will be spent on building six new military factories that will provide 1,000 jobs. The Royal Navy also wants to increase the number of destroyers and frigates from 14 to 25.
