It will help contain Russia.
The UK should help Ukraine build its own nuclear weapons to deter Russia, which is a nuclear power. This was stated at the Black Sea Security Forum in Odessa by retired British Colonel Richard Kemp, reports unian.net.
In January this year, the UK and Ukraine signed a declaration on a century-long strategic partnership. The document provides for cooperation in defense, intelligence, economic, climate and other areas.
"One thing I didn't see there, although I think there should have been, is nuclear capability. The UK has a semi-independent nuclear capability, but it's only strategic nuclear weapons. We no longer have operational nuclear weapons," Kemp said.
He noted that Russia has significant numbers of operational nuclear weapons and strategic nuclear systems with a wide kill radius.
"If this partnership document was supposed to be something like a bilateral agreement with NATO, as it seemed to present itself, then I do think the words 'nuclear weapons' should have been in there. I know people are horrified by the words "nuclear weapons." But you can't deter a country armed with nuclear weapons without nuclear capability. And you can't deter nuclear weapons on the battlefield with strategic nuclear weapons. It just doesn't matter," the retired colonel emphasized.
Kemp said the agreement between the two countries should have included a commitment by Britain to develop tactical nuclear weapons. He acknowledged that this is costly, but could help Ukraine develop its own nuclear capability, because it "gave it up in exchange for supposedly Western assurances that in fact were never honored."
"So I don't think we should just ignore the idea of the nuclear issue, which today seems to be glossed over, and I think wrongly so. Perhaps we need to have a multilateral agreement with NATO. And also help Ukraine develop its own nuclear capability," Kemp said.
