Ankara has leverage over the Kremlin.
In an interview with Radio NV, the executive director of the Penta Alexander Leonov Center for Applied Political Studies called it "not a bad sign" that Turkey has started threatening Russia.
"Turkey's threats are a very interesting point because, first of all, it corresponds quite interestingly with the latest change in the United States' rhetoric. And perhaps, given the good relationship between Trump and [Turkish President Republican President Rechep] Erdogan, just Turkish officials are on a certain mission of ties with Russia. On the other hand, Turkey itself has quite an important influence on Russia," Leonov said on Radio NV.
He reminded that Russian gas is now transported to Europe only through Turkish pipelines, so thanks to its transit capabilities, Turkey can "quite seriously" put pressure on Russia.
"And don't forget about the so-called parallel imports and the like. So just the fact that Turkey has started threatening Russia is not a bad sign that the pressure on Russia is increasing," the political analyst added.
Reminder, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said that Russia's unwillingness to show flexibility in peace talks to end the war against Ukraine could put it at a "disadvantage" in the eyes of the United States and the international community.
