Lithuania Plans To Independently Impose Sanctions Against The Belarusian Regime

Other countries may join the regional sanctions.

The Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs initiates changes in the legislation that would allow imposing national economic sanctions against Belarus and Russia even without the consent of the European Union.

As reported by The Baltic Times, Lithuania believes that such measures are needed in case Hungary blocks the extension of pan-European sanctions in July 2025. Therefore, the Lithuanian authorities want to reserve the right to block the import of goods and restrict trade on their own.

Lithuanian President's chief foreign policy adviser Asta Skaisgiritė emphasized that Poland, the Baltic States, Finland and other Nordic states could join the possible "regional sanctions".

"Ideally, the goal should be to extend EU sanctions against Moscow, a step that has already been implemented despite Hungary's objections," she said.

Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kjastutis Budris said an important step would be to create a regional agreement between countries bordering Russia and Belarus to block the import of goods to the European Union through land crossings.

"It would be nice to reach at least a regional agreement...," Budris told BNS news agency.
