He assured that the US will continue to support Ukraine.

Former U.S. Secretary of State Mark Pompeo believes that the United States did not do enough to stop Russia's war and restore peace in Ukraine in 2014.

He said this during the second international Black Sea Security Forum in Odessa, "European Pravda".

According to him, despite all attempts, US representatives have failed to thwart Kremlin chief Putin's plans and prevent a full-scale Russian invasion in 2022.

-I wish more had been done in 2014, that more had not been done in 2022, that we had lost deterrence. And now our task is to bring things back to stability. "I was involved in the 'Minsk talks' (...) we have sat at this table (negotiations, - Ed.) many times and there was no 'hammer', no leverage," the former US Secretary of State said.

Pompeo acknowledged that it was "a different time" then and Russia's aggression was "not as massive," but he pointed out, "if you look at the documents that were discussed during the 'Minsk talks,' I'm sure they are almost identical to what they are talking about now."

"And this should remind all of us: when Putin puts his weapons away for a moment, you can't go back to Russian gas. When he puts his guns away, you can't live the way you used to live," Pompeo emphasized.

He also assured that the United States cannot afford to abandon Ukraine in the fight against Russian aggression.

"As for the deeper question of whether Ukraine is considered a 'pawn' - I don't think so. I don't think anyone thinks that, 'sacrifice it and we'll have peace,'" he noted.

He pointed out that many members of the Republican Party "have expressed views that run counter to America's deep national interests on this issue."

"But I think they all also realize that at the end of the day, the U.S. can't just walk away from this. This is not a case where you can say, 'Good luck, you take it from here.' This is going to come after all of us - those of us who believe in basic human dignity, property rights, all the hallmarks of the sovereignty of nations. And I think those values will win out in the end," Pompeo said.
