Ukraine needs to regain control of it.
Former commander of US forces in Europe, Gen. Ben Hodges is convinced that Crimea temporarily occupied by Russian troops is "decisive territory" in Russia's war against Ukraine. According to him, the illegally built Kerch Bridge, which connects Crimea to the Russian Federation through the Kerch Strait, should remain an important target for the Ukrainian Defense Forces.
The American general said this in an interview with Apostrof. He believes that Crimea remains the most important captured territory for the Russians because it allows them to dominate the Black Sea.
"What we don't know is what place it has in the General Staff's priorities. I still believe that Crimea is the decisive territory in this war. It's what Russia wants most because it allows it to dominate the Black Sea. So if Ukraine can deny Russia the ability to use Crimea, that would be a big plus," Hodges said.
He believes Ukraine needs to make the Crimean bridge unusable, which would isolate the peninsula. Kiev needs control over the peninsula primarily in economic terms.
"I believe Ukraine will regain control over the peninsula because it is necessary for the long-term recovery of the Ukrainian economy. Without Crimea, Ukraine will not have access to the exclusive economic zone and everything else. So I believe that from a long-term perspective, regaining control of Crimea is still important," the general said.
