Lukashenko Threw Away The White Flag

Imports of "unfriendly" apples, potatoes, cabbage and onions have been given the green light.

Prime Minister of Belarus Alexander Turchin has lifted the ban on the import and sale in Belarus of potatoes, onions, cabbage and apples, from "unfriendly countries, including all EU member states," by Decree No. 287 of May 27, 2025, writes planbmedia.io.

This move is called a response to the fact that the European Parliament on May 22, 2025 approved the decision of the European Parliament to approve the draft decision of the European Parliament on May 22, 2025.html">planbmedia.io.

The move is described in the government's press service as a response to the European Parliament's May 22, 2025, approval of a draft decision to impose increased customs duties on imports of agricultural products and fertilizers from Belarus and Russia to the EU.

So suddenly "Belarus once again demonstrates openness, peacefulness, the principle of good-neighborliness and, by analogy with the decision on visa-free entry into our country of citizens of a number of states, including EU countries, relaxes the restrictions imposed on agricultural products from unfriendly countries".

So if you suddenly thought that such a sudden and asymmetric peacefulness is a response to the recently discovered shortage of the very same list (potatoes, cabbage, onions), you thought in vain.

But the answer is absolutely sensible, so some government slyness can be overlooked.

By the way, there were no apples in the list of problematic products that suddenly disappeared from store shelves in May. I mean, they were on the shelves, and no one took pictures of them. The reason for the apple prosperity was found in Polish statistics. Polish portal Sad24 reported that in April, most of the Polish apples exported outside the EU went to Belarus. It turns out that the market was temporarily opened. And the volumes are impressive: in April 2025, Poland supplied Belarus with almost 9 thousand tons of apples, 6 times more than in March.

The economy worked quietly and efficiently: neither Lukashenko and Putin talked about apples, nor propagandists worked their asses off. And there were apples and nobody was harmed by it. And if not for politics, there could have been potatoes and all other ingredients for borscht in their place. If they ran out of their own, they brought some from their neighbors, and that was it.
