Bloomberg: EU Has A Plan If Trump Turns His Back On Ukraine

This will force Putin to end the war.

European leaders are scrambling to find a way to provide Ukraine with weapons as US President Donald Trump looks likely to withdraw military aid to the country, which is defending itself from a Russian attack. One of the options they are considering is to buy American weapons. This writes Bloomberg, citing sources familiar with the matter.

Europe has neither sufficient stocks of weapons nor the ability to mass produce them, so an increasingly realistic option is for the Europeans to buy American weapons systems and then transfer them to Ukraine, the sources told the publication.

It is noted that this would help Ukraine contain Russia's offensive and put new pressure on Russian dictator Vladimir Putin And if the Europeans manage to convince Trump to keep providing intelligence, Ukraine could probably hold its ground.

"I don't quite see how it would be all that bad if the U.S. backed off, leaving the option for Europe or Ukraine to buy U.S. weapons and allowing intelligence sharing with Ukraine. It's not an ideal scenario, it's undeniably not the best scenario, but it's not the worst scenario we feared," said Andrew Weiss, vice president for research at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

Such a reversal would effectively put Trump in the position of having to choose between continuing to avoid conflict with Putin or profiting from large arms sales.

Experts warn that arms shipments approved and funded as far back as the administration of previous U.S. President Joe Biden could end as early as this summer, and Europe is unlikely to fill the gap.

That's why supplying Ukraine with U.S. weapons - bought or provided in the form of aid - is the only way to convince Putin to end the war, according to Charles Kapchan, a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations.

"Trump realizes that if he 'abandoned' Ukraine and Russia forced it to capitulate, it would be a resounding political defeat for him. Ukraine will become a new Afghanistan for Trump, if not worse," Kapchan said.
