A Pentagon spokesman commented on the information about the withdrawal of U.S. troops from South Korea.
Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell called reports that U.S. President Donald Trump's administration is preparing to make a decision to withdraw several thousand U.S. troops from South Korea untrue.
Parnell said that "reports that the Department of Defense will reduce the number of U.S. troops in the Republic of Korea (South Korea) are not true."
"Anyone who has covered the Pentagon knows that we are always reviewing troop deployments," Sean Parnell noted.
At the same time, he stressed that the U.S. remains fully committed to South Korea. The alliance with this country is unwavering.
The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) previously reported that the Trump administration is considering withdrawing thousands of U.S. troops from South Korea.
According to sources contacted by the publication, one of the options being developed by the Pentagon involves withdrawing about 4,500 troops and then deploying them elsewhere in the Indo-Pacific region, particularly on the island of Guam.
Since his first term as president, Donald Trump has repeatedly raised the issue of reviewing the presence of U.S. troops in the region. There are currently about 28,500 U.S. troops in the region.
