Trump is opposed.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is persuading President Donald Trump to impose sanctions against Russia amid the breakdown of ceasefire talks in Ukraine. However, the U.S. leader has so far been evasive, New Lines Magazine wrote, citing sources.
On May 20, Rubio appeared before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, which he once chaired. When questioned about the Trump administration's concessions to Russia, the secretary of state noted that U.S. sanctions have not been lifted and U.S. weapons and intelligence continue to flow into Ukraine, except for a week-long pause in March.
According to the publication, Rubio could have added that crucial sanctions on Russia's energy and banking sectors, legally speaking, cannot be lifted without congressional approval. However, he omitted that detail.
A source close to the secretary of state said on condition of anonymity:
"Notice how Rubio mentions sanctions almost every day. He wants Congress to consider Senator Senator Lindsey Graham's bill (for new sanctions on Russia) because he has a veto-proof majority in the Senate, and that would derail any reset in relations with Moscow."
Trump is reluctant to impose additional U.S. sanctions, though, as The Wall Street Journal reported, he has finally admitted to the Europeans that Putin is reluctant to end the war because he thinks he will win it.
