Putin doesn't consider the Pope neutral.
U.S. and European leaders are pinning their hopes on the Vatican to engage Russia and Ukraine in peace talks, after President Donald Trump said that Pope Leo XIV has expressed interest in the idea, and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni confirmed the same. However, the Kremlin is not interested in Russian leader Vladimir Putin traveling to the Vatican for talks, writes Bloomberg.
The publication's sources say Russian officials are not planning Putin's trip to the Vatican or anywhere else for talks, and are instead focused on the technical-level talks that began in Istanbul last week. That said, the Kremlin expects those talks to resume in Istanbul as well.
European officials say, however, that the Vatican's role as a potential host or mediator in the talks is being discussed. The talks could take place as early as next week, although that depends on Russia's willingness to take part.
According to the publication's interlocutors, U.S. officials are in contact with the Ukrainians to make sure the talks take place:
"They are also signaling to their Russian counterparts that they would prefer to avoid hardliners such as Putin aide Vladimir Medinsky, who led Moscow's delegation to Istanbul, attending the meeting."
Political consultant Sergei Markov believes Putin will not go to Italy, a NATO member state, for security reasons, and Russia does not consider the Vatican neutral in the conflict.
