German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said this, according to Tagesspiegel.

"There is no sign yet that this war will end quickly. They are trying to achieve everything possible diplomatically. The offer of mediation by the pope is the last earthly resort," Merz said.

In his view, one can only hope that at least the Vatican will be able to bring the conflicting sides together for a constructive dialog.

The chancellor said it was important for him that Germany play an "active, supportive, strong" role.
