Now British officials are talking about the threat of espionage by Russian Federation.

Russian Federation has sent a senior official to Mauritius shortly after the country gained control of the islands next to the UK and US strategic base Camp Thunder Cove. The UK has leased the island and has now spotted a threat of espionage from the Kremlin.

The potential Russian Federation threat to the naval base in the Pacific was highlighted by The Telegraph.

The publication notes that the UK has expressed concern because of the friendly relationship between Mauritius and the Russian Federation. This is evidenced by the visits of Russian Agriculture Minister Oksana Loot to the island country and a meeting between Mauritius' foreign minister and the Chinese ambassador. At the same time, the government of Prime Minister Keir Starmer ceded control of the Chagos Islands in the Indian Ocean to Mauritius.

One of the largest islands, Diego Garcia, was leased for 100 years for 9 billion pounds ($12 billion). The island is home to a strategic U.S. and British military base, so there have been concerns that because of the decision, Russian Federation is free to spy on British and American activities at the base, the article said.

"Critics say it will allow Mauritius' allies to set up listening posts around Diego Garcia, threatening the security of the base," the publication wrote.

Opposition members are concerned that the current prime minister "has handed over one of the most important strategic and military assets to a country that has been stinting the Meanwhile, Starmer has assurances that the agreement has been negotiated with the US. However, The Telegraph summarizes, amid the escalating situation with the Kremlin, the lease is likely to be slightly postponed.

The Thunder Cove military base is a US and UK air and naval facility built in the 1960s, the militarybases portal tells us. Diego Garcia Island was leased to the US and was home to 1,700 US military personnel and 50 Britons. Satellite images obtained by The Telegraph show 12 airplanes next to an airstrip. It is also home to submarines, space surveillance systems and radar, the portal claims.

Google Maps shows that the Chagos archipelago is located in the center of the Indian Ocean. The distance to the US and British military base is about 60 km. Mauritius is 2000 km away.
