After Prigozhin's mutiny, the general suddenly disappeared from the media field.
The former commander-in-chief of the Russian Air and Space Forces and the general who was the commander of Russian troops in the war in Ukraine, Sergei Surovikin has been found: a photo of him was posted on the page of the Russian Embassy in Algeria. Prior to that, since June 2023 and the so-called "Prigozhin mutiny," the general had suddenly disappeared from the media field.
The location of Surovikin was reported by the Russian Telegram channel "Kommersant" on May 12.
The former commander of Russian troops was spotted in the national capital as he, surrounded by several other officials and military officers, went to lay flowers at the tomb of an unknown Soviet soldier located within Delhi's Ibrahim Military Cemetery. The officials in the photo are carrying a wreath of flowers wrapped in a ribbon with the colors of the Russian flag, and their clothes are decorated with St. George ribbons.
It is worth noting that the note does not directly mention that it is Sergei Surovikin who is seen in the footage. It only says that he is "the head of a group of Russian military specialists in Algeria."
Before that, Kommersant wrote in September 2023 that Surovikin was in Algeria with representatives of the Russian Defense Ministry, where he could probably be appointed to a diplomatic post related to "work in the eastern direction."
Why Surovikin disappeared
On October 8, 2022, Sergei Surovikin was ordered by the Russian Defense Ministry to become commander of the Joint Group of Forces in the war in Ukraine. It was under his leadership that the Russian army began a massive attack on Ukrainian energy facilities.
Surovikin's name is associated with the construction of a vast network of trenches, minefields, barbed wire fences in the occupied territories, which were called "Surovikin's lines".
Surovikin disappeared from the media field after Prigozhin's mutiny in June 2023, and in January 2023, Russian President Vladimir Putin dismissed him from his post as head of the Russian Armed Forces military forces, appointing Valery Gerasimov in his place.
In September 2023, Russian media wrote that Russian authorities had removed all references to Surovikin.
