The U.S. president is ready to impose new sanctions.
Donald Trump has been more actively coordinating his efforts to reach a peace deal in Ukraine with European countries in recent weeks, Bloomberg writes, citing European officials. If Vladimir Putin continues to stall the talks, Western countries may jointly take measures to put additional pressure on Russia.
Despite the greater coherence, Trump has not shown as tough a stance in his public remarks as representatives of European nations. On Saturday, the leaders of Germany, France, Britain and Poland visited Kiev to show support for Vladimir Zelensky and effectively gave Putin an ultimatum, saying they would begin preparing new sanctions on Monday if Russia did not stop attacking Ukraine. Trump endorsed their statement and has signaled in private conversations that he will act with them even if additional sanctions have to be imposed, a European official familiar with the matter told Bloomberg.
European leaders are demanding that Russia abide by a cease-fire starting Monday; it will face a strong European and U.S. response if the attacks continue, another senior European official told the agency on Sunday. The U.S. fully supports this position, he added.
